Magical voyage to Neverland

GCP’s production of Peter and the Starcatcher has launched a shipload of shenanigans.  This wildly theatrical adventure offers a hilarious prequel to the legend of Peter Pan for audiences of all ages.

With a full cargo of marauding pirates, tribal warriors, inept villains, and an unlikely hero, Peter and the Starcatcher happily careens from one escapade to the next. When a young orphan boy and his friends are shipped from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by an evil king, they are discovered by a girl named Molly. She is a Starcatcher-in-training whose mission is to keep the captain’s trunk of starstuff from falling into the wrong hands.

When the ship is taken over by the fearsome pirate, Black Stache, the outlandish adventure veers crazily through a rising tide of hilarity. A handful of actors play hundreds of roles on this magical voyage to Neverland.   Rated PG.

A rollicking farce

It’s high tide and fair sailing at Good Company Players’ 2nd Space Theatre with Gilbert & Sullivan’s laugh-laden shipboard romance, H.M.S. Pinafore.  A zany musical romance on the high seas, H.M.S. Pinafore comes complete with star-crossed lovers, gallant sailors, crusty old sea dogs, babies switched at birth, and gales of laughter.

When a lowly but gallant sailor falls in love with the high-born Captain’s daughter and she with him, her own social prejudice must first be overcome. That accomplished, the fair maiden’s father has promised her hand in marriage to a pompous but high-ranking lord and refuses to allow his daughter to marry a common tar.

But the captain finds himself in the same position as his daughter, as he longs for Little Buttercup, a buxom peddler woman with a secret. Just when all seems lost, Buttercup spills the beans and everything is turned on its head. A rollicking farce with endearing characters, memorable tunes and a hilariously happy ending, H.M.S. Pinafore is one ship you won’t want to miss.   Rated G.

Behind the Stage Door

Aspiring young actresses take on the Depression and Broadway in this wisecracking tribute to theatre.   Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman’s Stage Door opens April 27 at GCP’s 2nd Space.

The play concerns a group of young girls who have come to New York to study acting and find jobs. The scene is Mrs. Orcutt’s boarding house, where the hopes and ambitions of several young women are revealed in scenes of entertaining comedy. Contrasted with this are the cases of the girl without talent and the elderly actress whose days are over.

The central plot has to do with courageous Terry Randall, who fights against discouragement to a position in the theater which she is determined conquer. One of her fellow aspirants gives up in despair, one gets married, and one goes into pictures, but Terry sticks to her guns. Rated PG.
