The Pirates of Penzance
Good Company Players’ rollicking production weighs anchor at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater on May 22 with a boatload full of merriment
The curtain rises on this rowdy musical as the Pirates of Penznace are celebrating naive young Frederic’s 21 birthday. Apprenticed by accident to the Pirate King until he’s 21, Frederic has served out his indenture dutifully but that same sense of duty demands that now that he is free, he must devote himself to the extermination of piracy. The fair-minded (and none-too-bright) pirates agree that he must follow his heart and wish him well.
However, his old nurse Ruth stops him and attempts to entrap him into marriage by convincing him that she is quite beautiful. He believes her, having seen very few women in his life. Suddenly, the truly lovely young daughters of Major-General Stanley arrive on the scene and Frederic realizes he has been duped. He denounces his devious nurse and becomes instantly smitten with Mabel, the prettiest of all the young ladies. The pirates, in turn, are smitten by Mabel’s sisters whom they seize, intending to force them into marriage. |

The Major-General arrives and, knowing the pirates have a soft spot for orphans, claims to be one himself. The tender-hearted pirates immediately set the Major-General and his outraged offspring free. Meanwhile, Frederic plans to lead a band of not-so-courageous policemen against the pirates. Unfortunately, Ruth and the Pirate King discover that Frederic was born in leap year and technically he won’t celebrate his actual 21st birthday for 63 more years.Faithful Mabel promises to wait and Frederic rejoins the pirates, now feeling duty-bound to inform them that the plea of ‘orphandom’ was a ruse. The pirates re-capture the Major-General and his delectable daughters and all seems lost — but have they underestimated the bumbling boys in blue?Full of fabulous voices and masterful comic performances, this happy romp sails the high-larious seas through July 13th. The Pirates of Penzance will capture your heart! |
